Deepwater may move HQ to Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE – Wind farm developer Deepwater Wind is “actively considering” relocating its headquarters to Rhode Island from New Jersey, CEO Bill Moore told Providence Business News Tuesday.

Moore said a move is dependent on if Deepwater’s proposed wind farm off the coast of Block Island moves forward. Legislation introduced in the General Assembly last week appeared to give new legs to the project after the R.I. Public Utilities Commission dealt the farm a blow by denying a contract between Deepwater and National Grid. The latest bill would take permission to approve the contract out of the hands of the PUC and hand it to the heads of four administrative departments.

Lawmakers have scheduled a Senate committee meeting for Wednesday to hear the legislation. Gov. Donald L. Carcieri supports the bill, according to his spokeswoman Amy Kempe.

Deepwater Wind relocating its headquarters to Rhode Island could provide a boon for what state officials envision as an emerging industry centered on offshore wind farm development and construction.
