Editorial: A little vision, please

The difficulty of doing anything new in energy around here was emphasized when the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission, taking a myopic view, rejected a long-term contract for National Grid to buy power from the small, eight-turbine “demonstration project” proposed by Deepwater Wind for off Block Island.

This, on the face of it, is dismaying. Here’s one new industry for which Rhode Island would seem very well suited and a company with a plausible plan to get things going. Not only would we get a bit of clean, locally produced energy, we’d have a big building block with which to start a local industry that seems ready made for Rhode Island, with Quonset as its center. This could, among other things, re-energize Rhode Island’s once important manufacturing role. Read more…
