Governor Carcieri Commends Deepwater and National Grid for New Power Purchase Agreement

Governor Donald L. Carcieri today commended Deepwater Wind and National Grid for acting quickly to sign a new 20-year, Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for electricity generated from the Block Island offshore wind project.

“I commend Deepwater Wind and National Grid for acting quickly to move this project forward, assuring Rhode Island remains the leader in developing the nation’s first offshore wind project,” said Governor Carcieri. “We have the opportunity to once again control our economic destiny, to lead the nation in the creation of a new industry, and to create hundreds, if not thousands, of good paying jobs for Rhode Islanders.”

The new PPA is the result of recently signed Long Term Contracting legislation, H8083A & S2819A, which clarified the General Assembly’s original intent to encourage and promote clean, independent, renewable energy in Rhode Island through a demonstration sized, offshore wind project. Read more…
