Poll Shows Majority of Islanders Support Offshore Wind
A recently conducted poll commissioned by the Block Island Land Trust showed a majority of respondents support the construction of an offshore wind farm off Block Island’s southern coast with a cable connecting the island to the mainland.
The poll, performed by private public opinion polling company the Kitchens Group, showed 63 percent of the island either somewhat or strongly in favor of the project while 31 percent somewhat or strongly opposed it.
The poll, which is statistically significant with a sample size of 100 individuals and a margin of error of 6.4 percent, found 41 percent strongly in favor of the construction of an offshore wind farm, with 22 percent somewhat in favor. Those opposing the project had a more visceral reaction with 27 strongly opposed, while only 4 percent were somewhat opposed.
The poll showed similar results over the island’s support for an on shore municipal turbine, with 62 percent in favor and 27 percent opposed.
