R.I. and Mass. ink wind agreement
Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick signed an agreement Monday to join efforts to develop offshore wind farms in federal waters between Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard.
The “area of mutual interest” defined in the agreement covers roughly 400 square miles and is inside the area being studied by the Coastal Resource Management Council’s Special Area Management Plan. The SAMP will be used as the basis for planning and siting wind farms within the area the states identified.
A 100-turbine wind farm proposed by Deepwater Wind could be partially inside this area; however, neither the smaller Block Island wind farm currently under consideration, nor the Cape Wind project, fall within the area of interest. Read more…
