Block Island Wind Farm Lauded for Groundbreaking Innovation

America’s First Offshore Wind Farm Honored with Regional and Global Awards

Providence, R.I. – June 12, 2021 – The Block Island Wind Farm was honored this month with two awards recognizing the project for its innovation and groundbreaking achievement as America’s first offshore wind farm.

The FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards by The Financial Times and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, last week honored the Block Island Wind Farm with one of two Overall Awards for Excellence in Climate Solutions.

These awards recognize “global initiatives that highlight groundbreaking, commercial viable solutions to today’s development challenges.” This year, the Transformational Business Awards focused on “disruptive technologies” and those that address climate change.

The Environmental Business Council of New England awarded the Block Island Wind Farm last week with the 2017 Ira W. Leighton, Jr. Outstanding Environmental – Energy Technology Award, which recognizes “difference makers” who apply “innovative technologies to solve problems or advance the state of the art” in the environmental and energy sectors.

“We’re tremendously honored that the Block Island Wind Farm is being recognized by such esteemed organizations and alongside so many other accomplished environmental leaders across the globe,” said Deepwater Wind CEO Jeffrey Grybowski. “We take our position as the pioneers of the new U.S offshore wind industry very seriously, and we’re confident the Block Island Wind Farm is just the start of an East Coast energy revolution that will transform how we power our communities.”

In addition, Grybowski was recognized as one of FastCompany magazine’s annual list of Most Creative People, announced earlier this month.
